Movement: Social Justice and Accessible Yoga
A training for teachers and therapists
This is a three part program: module taking place in May 16 , August 8, and November 7, 2020. Great for movement instructors, therapists, and anyone dual certified + interest in interdisciplinary teaching, together we will explore the conversation about intersectionality between yoga, social justice, trauma, and accessibility.
In each course module, you’ll take a specific class + practice teach the same class type. An associated social discussion topic will be woven through the session. Each topic was selected because of patterns we’ve noticed as specialty practitioners which relate to or arise from that corresponding class type needs and concerns.
You can register for any single module or all three modules of the series at a reduced rate.
The entire course is 9 Yoga Alliance Contact Hours and 4.5 Texas Social Work, LPC, and LMFT CEUS.

Module 1
Accessibility for Mat Based Yoga + Language Needs In this module, you’ll learn the basics on how to structure and guide an accessible mat yoga class that is inclusive, accepting, and meaningful. The associated discussion topic we felt is important to explore: how language and environment of a yoga class or other spaces students or clients may be showing up at intersect social justice. How to engage students so they feel empowered, encouraged to experience choice, and trauma informed practices. Module 2
Chair Based Yoga + Support Network Needs In this module, you’ll learn the basics on how to structure and guide a chair based yoga class that is inclusive, accepting, and meaningful. The associated discussion topic we felt is important to explore: Support Network Needs. like: Demographics, Seniors, Not-Just-Seniors, Larger bodies, Injuries, Acceptance of ability, changing physical ability, Isolation, Loneliness, Shifting cognition, repetitive stress type injury in Athletes. Module 3 Age Injury Illness + Social Emotional Needs In this module, you’ll learn the basics on how to structure and guide an accessible mat and chair based yoga class that is inclusive, accepting, and meaningful in regards to injury, illness, and aging. The associated discussion topic we felt is important to explore: how social emotional needs can be present in regards to age, injury, or illness. How to manage the expectations of the student/client and create an empowered environment for the students/clients. How the yoga studio, gym, hospital, senior center may be much more than a place for fitness but also an opportunity for social support. Meet the Facilitators
Angela Prior is the owner and founder of AP Counseling and Yoga. She is a LCSW-S, 200 hour Registered Yoga Teacher, and a Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor.
It is Angela's belief that yoga holds the special key to unlocking the mind body connection which can be a powerful tool in emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual health. She teachers from a body accessible space because yoga is for every BODY and any shape can be made accessible. Angela is also a trauma informed teacher and believes in the power of language and consent in her teaching. As a social worker Angela has a deep passion and drive to increase awareness and provide tools for real change in her community and beyond. |
Amanda Dunnavant is the owner of C'est La Yoga! and is an inclusive teacher who cares about yoga for all mobility kinds and believes anyone can create a sustainable-for-life movement practice by cultivating clear self-seeing followed by recognizing in action our needs which are shifting, dynamic, and interesting.
Having practiced for fifteen years, and taught for nearly ten, Amanda was trained in yoga therapy and yoga teaching at Ananda Seva Mission in Santa Rosa California and Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health in Stockbridge Massachusetts. Both institutions lead with an emphasis on holistic lifestyle and practical, meaning-rich, and compassionate yoga. These principles guide her yoga, meditation, and therapeutic movement classes which span environments from yoga studios, to counseling practices, corporate settings, museums, addiction rehabilitation centers, and behavioral health hospitals. Amanda is currently the Community Coordinator at Athleta Turtle Creek, where she gets to fulfill her passion for networking this broad scope within our fitness and wellness industry. |
