Your Story is All Your Own

Picture
I have been following my heart with this blog and writing about things that come up in both my life and that may be on repeat with clients in sessions.  Over the past couple of weeks one of those topics that feel like it has just been on repeat is, “Your Story is all you Own”.

You are the author, editor, and lead character in your own story, your life. I hope that doesn’t sound too much like a cliché, but it is very true.  Your life is all your own story. You have the power to change the plot and the supporting characters. What happened in chapter 1 or 10 doesn’t have to define you in chapter 22.   If you are unhappy with the direction it is going, feel stuck in the same old patterns, or feel elated that things just took a happy twist, that’s all you.  You did that.  You can make a choice, you can change a behavior or not, and you can either change the flow of the story or stick to it.

How wonderful is that?  That every moment of every day you have opportunity to change and grow.  When you put things in that kind of perspective things start to feel really uplifting and hopeful.

Sometimes we can find ourselves ruminating over the past or unhappy with the current direction life is going.  We can’t change the past but we can control our now.  We can make an active choice to do something different.  If what you have been doing isn’t working, it’s time to try something new.

Maybe that something new is ending a toxic relationship, making that career change, going to therapy, going to your 1st yoga class, journaling, or going to bed earlier than you did the night before.  The something new can be anything.   Big or small there is no right way to try something new.  It may not be comfortable and that’s ok.  Uncomfortable does not mean it is bad.  That just means it is different and different can be hard and scary.  Something that helps me when I’m in the middle of trying something new, is a remind myself “My story is all my own” and what is uncomfortable today doesn’t have to be uncomfortable tomorrow.  I am writing this story and I get to choose.

So take a deep breath with me and say to yourself “My story is all my own”.
